Breast Enlargement

Female human physical attributes are admired and worshipped like no other entity, except possibly for the concept of God. Artists have forever tried to emulate the curves, shapes, textures, and surfaces of the female anatomy. They have joined the quest of the classical philosophers in their attempts to define the one, true, perfect idea of reality. No wonder then, that breast enlargement is one of the most sought-after surgical procedures performed on otherwise healthy individuals today.

Different modalities, from herbal to surgical – Breast enlargement modalities include non-surgical methods, such as herbal programs, and the surgical insertion of breast implants. Herbal and other non-invasive methods can produce mild to moderate short term results that only persist as long as the material is ingested. Once the prescribed treatment is withdrawn, any results will dissipate. Surgical intervention, which is accomplished by inserting synthetic material into subcutaneous layer of the chest, has longer lasting results with a more predictable outcome.

Types of insertion techniques – The material that is commonly used is a bag filled with silicon or saline enclosed in a silicone rubber case. The sterile bag is either inserted through a small surgical incision, or by using a trocar to insert the material through a cannula into the tissue. The implant material can be inserted through an incision around the nipple margin, at the lower border of the breast, or at the belly button, or TUBA (transumbilical breast augmentation).

Types of implants – Surgeons use saline or silicone breast implant material. There are many who support either material and many who decry the use of one over the other. This is your place to become informed about the different camps and their convictions.

Contraindications – Who may not be the perfect candidate for breast enlargement? For a number of diverse reasons, some women may not be perfect candidates for a surgical breast procedure. Allergy to any of the components of the implant can cause a life-threatening reaction, including the anesthesia, or the associated medications.

Complications – About 5 percent of women who undergo breast enlargement may experience capsular contracture, which is a tightening and thickening of the tissue surrounding the implant. It can be painful and permanent requiring removal or replacement of the implant. Bleeding from the surgical site can occur which could necessitate another surgery to stop the bleeding. Keloid scarring is an abnormal form of scarring that extends beyond the margin of the incision and can be esthetically disfiguring. Loss of sensitivity to touch can occur, which is occasionally permanent. The procedure itself is done under sterile conditions and is very safe.

Reversals and Replacements – Claims that breast implants can remain intact and symptom-free for ten to twenty or more years are well-substantiated. Patients are advised however, that breast enlargement is not permanent and to expect that some day, they will eventually need to have their prostheses removed or replaced. Replacements or removals are occasionally necessary due to rupture, or other causes.
